Nova Alternative School

If you are behind at your high school, are considering dropping out, or have dropped out of school, Nova School, a non-traditional high school, may be able to serve you.

Working in conjunction with the Watertown Area Career Learning Center and the Watertown School District, Nova School will provide an opportunity for the student who is not succeeding in the traditional classroom to obtain:  academic credit, career/employment exploration, and extended teacher/peer support in an alternative setting with the goal of obtaining a diploma.

Nova School serves youth ages 16-21 and accepts students by application.  The application process begins at Watertown High School, and students are interviewed by a team of teachers, administrators, and counselors from WHS and from Nova School.  After acceptance, students may attend Nova School full time or be dual enrolled while taking some classes at Watertown High School. Students may enroll at Nova School at any time during the year.

Students receive an individualized academic plan of study geared towards a high school diploma and usually work on one or two subjects at a time while at Nova School.  Course work follows the curriculum plan of Watertown High School.  Students are held accountable for attendance and completion of work and an 80% is required on all assignments.  Nova School offers courses in Math, English, and Social Sciences, and some electives. The rest of the required classes will be taken at the traditional high school.

Students from the Multi District Schools (8 surrounding schools) have an allotted number of slots.  The admission process starts at the home school of the student and that school district pays a daily tuition to the Watertown School District.

Nova School is open from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. during the traditional school year.  An eight-week summer session is also offered.  At the time of registration a attendance plan is designed for each student in accordance with his or her High School schedule.  Full Time students attend 5 hours a day Monday thru Thursday usually between the hourse of 8 and 1.  Alternative adjustments can be made if needed.

A time clock is used to keep track of these hours.

This format gives the flexibility needed by some students to hold full time jobs, raise children, attend counseling sessions, etc. and still attend high school.

All students can participate in extra curricular activities at their home school.  The diploma is issued from the home school and students receive their diploma at the traditional commencement ceremony.  Nova School encourages connection with the home school, as most students will return to the building for some classes.

Students are offered an opportunity to participate in career exploration, job shadowing, job skills workshops, teen parenting classes, chemical dependency awareness and counseling, human services programs, community service projects, college applications and scholarships, and other programs that would benefit the student.  Nova School wants to help you become a successful, contributing member of your community.
